Abstract
The purposes of this study are to reveal how the issue of gender stereotype is experienced by the female character and also to analyze how the female character deals with gender stereotype in The Tenth Muse (2019) novel by Catherine Chung. Furthermore, as a guide to complete this study, the writer uses the theory from Judith Butler (2006) about gender performativity. It deals with the concept that gender is not something that is formed from a person's biological factors but is formed because of performativity. It means this theory explains that gender is unstable and does not have an original identity. Then, the method used in this study is a qualitative research method that presents data analysis in essay format, which takes from the narrations and dialogues in the novel. Thus, the results of this study show that there are two forms of gender stereotypes in education and economics. Gender stereotype in both fields are portrayed in female character whose abilities are always compared to males while studying and working. Next, the writer also discusses the ways used by a female character to deal with this issue, such as ignoring all negative assumptions given to her.
