Abstract

This study aimed to discover the depiction of Asian Americans as 'Other' and the characters' resistance in Joanna Ho's The Silence That Binds Us (2022). Focusing on the characters, the study investigated how the Occident dominates and alienates the Asian American community, perpetuating false accusations and stereotypes. Edward Said's theory (1978) in the concept of Orientalism was used to uncover how Asian Americans are culturally depicted as 'Other' with inherent power imbalances. The writer used a qualitative, post-colonial approach, analyzing textual data from the novel, such as dialogues, descriptions, and narratives. The result of the study described that Asian Americans are depicted as 'Other' due to the influence of the Occident, which involves domination and alienation. This means that the Western culture tends to portray Asian Americans as different or separate, leading to a sense of being outsiders. Additionally, the study revealed the characters' resistance strategies to the Occident by using verbal words and speaking up as a powerful form of protest.
