Abstract
This study entitled “Women’s Empowerment Depicted in Selected Song Lyrics Thank U, Next Album by Ariana Grande” examines about the portrayal of women’s empowerment in the selected songs of Thank U, Next album which are Needy, NASA, Bloodline, Fake Smile, Ghostin, In My Head, 7 Rings, and Thank U, Next. The objectives of this study are to discover the portrayal and the impact of women’s empowerment that is conveyed in the selected song lyrics. This study uses the qualitative study approach as the analysis is given in the form of a narrative. To guide this study, the writer applies the feminsim perspective of Helene Cixous (1976) in feminine writing as the foundation theory and women’s empowerment of self-worth from Barbara Rowland-Serdar & Peregrine Schwartz-Shea (1991) as the support theory. The results of this study show the examination of how the album contributes to the discourse of women’s empowerment while portraying the themes of self-love, self-confidence, agency, and vulnerability. The album had a significant impact on society given that it promoted independence and self-worth, embrace uniqueness, and shaped how people perceived women.
