Abstract

This study is entitled “Language Function Used on BTS Kim Nam Joon Speech at The United Nations in 2018”. This study aimed to analysing the types of language function and the contextual meaning behind language function used by BTS Kim Nam Joon on his speech at the United Nations in 2018. The theory used for this study was language function proposed by Roman Jakobson which was written in his book entitled “Linguistics and Poetics” (1960). This study was conducted used qualitative descriptive approach because the data were analysed in the form of written text. The data of this study were the script of BTS Kim Nam Joon speech took from one content of video in UNICEF’s YouTube channel. The title of the datum was “BTS Speech at the United States | UNICEF” with duration of 6 minutes 29 seconds from UNICEF YouTube channel. The results of the study were divided into two partials. First, it described the types of language function found on the 24 utterances of BTS Kim Nam Joon on his speech at the United Nations, consisted of: five data as referential function with percentage 21%, five data as emotive function with percentage 21%, four conative functions with percentage 17%, metalingual function as much as one data with percentage 4%, eight data as phatic function with percentage 33%, last types of language function as poetic function as much as one data with percentage 4%. The most dominant types of language function used on BTS’s Kim Nam Joon speech at the United Nation in 2018 was phatic function. Second, it revealed the contextual meaning behind the language function used on BTS Kim Nam Joon speech at the United Nations by analysing the context each of the utterance used eleven types of contexts proposed by Pateda (2010).
