Abstract

Gender equality between women and men is still difficult to fight for even though gender equality is widely discussed. Many people thinks that women are powerless and the second sex. This indirectly causes gender discrimination, the discrimination of gender itself is due to the understanding that women are the second gender and gender dominance over men. Moreover, to increase the gender-based discrimination it is necessary to decrease Women empowerment. Women empowerment is a movement that give the freedom for women to choose their life decission. Observing Gender-Based discrimination and Women's Empowerment in Martha Hall Kelly's Novel “Lilac Girls”, this study aims to: How are the gender-based discrimination reflected and How the Women Empowerment depicted by the three main characters in that novel. This study used Friedan (1963) gender inequality and women emancipation theory by applying qualitative approach. This study uses the quotation in Lilac Girls novel as data collection. The writer concludes that in the novel “Lilac Girls” by Martha Hall Kelly tries to emphasize gender discrimination in societal phenomena, including in individual approaches and perspectives in general (family, community). The discrimination that occurs when the three main characters makes them women showing their power and proves the existence of women empowerment which has a big impact on society. Then, the phenomenon of gender discrimination and women empowerment in Martha Hall Kelly's novel is related to Betty Friedan's perspective on gender inequality and women empowerment.
