Abstract
This thesis is entitled Racial Discrimination Practices in Ta-Nehisi Coates' The Water Dancer. This study discusses the kinds of racial discrimination and the resistance in Coates’ novel The Water Dancer. The Water Dancer takes place in Virginia during the expansion of slavery. Hiram, the protagonist, is a slavery African-American man who was born and grew up on the Lockless tobacco plantation and estate. In the end, he joins the Underground in their fight for equality. The writer used the qualitative method to find out the kinds and resistance of racial discrimination in this novel. The novel was analyzed using the theory of Orientalism (1993) by Edward Said. In this study, the writer found out that there are four kinds of racial discrimination: inequality treatment, servitude, white supremacy, and trafficking. The analysis also shows that blacks and whites do resistance. Based on the findings and discussions, the results concluded that racial discrimination is the behavior of the whites race that threatens physical and mental harm to the black race and unfair action that raises anti-colonial resistance to racial discrimination. Keywords: black race, racism, white race.
