Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze cultural values in a children’s fiction book. The object of this study is the script writings available in a children’s fiction book entitled Where the Mountain Meets the Moon (2009) by Grace Lin. This study applies a qualitative method that presents the analysis in the form of texts. In order to conduct this study, the writer uses the perspectives of Edward Burnett Tylor (1873) and Shalom H. Schwartz (2006) on culture and cultural value. This study resulted in the existence of the cultural value of the text’s narration, especially in Chinese folklore in a children's fiction book by Grace Lin. Furthermore, this study concludes that there are several cultural values in Chinese folklores that have a significant influence on the main character. Some of the cultural values are a belief in a mythical creature that brings trouble and solution to life on earth and a belief in the Old Man of the Moon who governs human destiny and fortune as well as a belief in the image of the Dragon as a symbol of glory that contains blessedness, and peace for Chinese society. The writer finds some impact of cultural values to the main characters that give many positive contributions such as having Improving physical look and increasing enthusiasm on the main character, establishing the great empathy as well as consistent effort in changing destiny.
