Abstract

The purposes of this study are to identify alienation depicted and to analyze the cause of it in the main character of The Case of the Missing Marquess by Nancy Springer. The writer applied Seeman's (1959) theory of alienation to deliver the alienation issue depicted and participation theory of Wojtyla (1979) to find out the causal factors that drive alienation. Moreover, the writer used qualitative method by Nassaji (2015) as the approach of the study. The result of this study shows the main character developed five dimentions of alienation, such as powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, isolation, and self-estrangement. Furthermore, there are two factors cause alienation, self-isolation and the social system. Self-isolation develops individually and the social system develops in community.
