Abstract

The purpose of the study was to analyze the main woman character's struggles for gender equality in the novel The Heir which was written by Kiera Cass. The struggles for gaining equality that had to face by women were described by the main character who battles for respect and recognition from her people even though she is a woman. In order to bring this study into purpose, the writer formulated two problems of the study (1) How is the main woman character’s struggle for equality depicted in the novel The Heir (2) What is the effect of the main woman character’s struggle for equality in the novel The Heir. This study applied qualitative research methods with the note-taking technique by recording data in words, sentences, and paragraphs. The writer managed to find 34 data consisting of narrations and dialogues. The data are categorized into 2 categories including the woman struggle (18 data) and woman’s struggle result (16 data). The writer used a feminist theory from Simone de Beauvoir (1989). Eventually, from the main character of the novel, this study analysis found that to get equality, an independent woman had to struggle powerfully with the challenges to have power for their own lives and indeed the others. Keywords: equality, independent woman, women struggle.
