Abstract

This study aims to reveal the issue of gender-based violence in the form of domestic abuse experienced by the main character and the struggle to escape from abusive relationship in Anna Quindlen’s Black and Blue novel (1998). The main character named Fran has stayed silent over her husband’s abusive behavior until her son knows the truth that she decides to escape from her husband. In conducting the study, the writer used feminism theory by Bell Hooks. Moreover, this study applied a qualitative and textual approach. The results of this study revealed that the main character experiences four kinds of domestic abuse; physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse and verbal abuse. It exposes that the main causes of the domestic abuse in the novel are the husband’s jealousy and possessiveness over the main character. In addition, husband's sense of the right to punish the main character for perceived wrongdoing, and husband importance of maintaining or exercising his position of authority. In order to gain back her freedom, the main character who conscious of her life’s importance as well as her son’s struggles to escape from domestic abuse by making decision for her life and starting new life with new identity by the help from professional agent.
