Abstract

This qualitative study entitled “The Defense Mechanism of The Main Character in Ann M.Martin’s Rain Reign Novel” shows the analysis of personality disorders in Ann M. Martin's novel Rain Reign using the theory of personality disorders by Kernberg (2014). The author uses qualitative methods to analyze research data because the data is in the form of a narrative. In this novel, Rose Howard is the main character, who is diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, Rose also has a personality disorder. Rose lives with Mr. Wesley Howard (her father) and Rose has an uncle named Mr. Weldon. Rose has a dog, Rain, which Wesley brought home for Thanksgiving last year. Rose has a bad relationship with her father but on the other hand, she has a good relationship with her uncle. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the relationship between personality disorders experienced by Rose which then creates conflicts, both internal and external conflicts. The results of this study show that when the main character is faced with unwanted feelings in life such as anxiety, frustration, conflict, and threats, that person will automatically use defense mechanisms to overcome these feelings. In this novel, it is found that Rose in dealing with conflicts caused by personality disorders then she uses the defense mechanism of Repression and Rationalization.
