Abstract

This study is entitled “Representation of Male Feminity in I am Jazz Picture Book by Jessica Herthel”. This study aims to analyze the value of critical thinking in picture books that contain topics about children who tend to be Transgender and feminine. In the transgender phenomenon, several problems can be analyzed when the human being chooses to grow to be transgender and has feminine behavior. The object of this study uses a storybook available in the book I am Jazz (Herthel, 2014) by Jessica Herthel. This research uses a Qualitative Approach method that presents an analysis of the influence of thinking on children that tends to lead to transgender behavior available through images and writings in the book. In answering the problem formulation in the problem of transgender identity and feminity, the writer uses data from Susan Stryker (2008) theory perspective on the history of transgender and feminity. The writer also finds several factors that influence the main character so that the feminine tends to behave like a girl, starting from family, social, and psychological factors. This study also concludes that the phenomenon of transgender tendencies and feminity in the story book I am Jazz is an original story that is lifted from the personal experience of a small child.
