Abstract

This study titled “Gender Enforced Roles in Deesha Philyaw’s “The Secret Lives of Church Ladies”” is aimed to find out how gender-enforced roles are portrayed in the seven short stories and their effects on the characters. To analyze the stories, the writer used qualitative content analysis. The analysis, thus, used Hilary M. Lips’ theory about genders and their characteristics. The results of the study showed that the gender roles in “The Secret Lives of Church Ladies” are portrayed unequally, in which the female enforced role appears more dominant than the male one. This study also revealed the effects of gender enforced roles on the characters such as: the characters’ views are being restricted (Eula and Caroletta), being rejected and judged (Caroletta, Arletha, Rhonda, Lyra, Jamie, Jael, and Mama), being forced to move out (Arletha and Rhonda), and being unable to express their nonconformity (Arletha and Kachelle). Keywords: Gender Roles, Traditional Gender Roles, Nonconformity, Rejection.
