Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explain the issues of trauma. This study is entitled “Traumatic Experiences in Freshwater Novel by Akwaeke Emezi”. This study focused on the form of trauma and the effect of trauma experienced by the main character in the novel. The object of this study is the novel “Freshwater” by Akwaeke Emezi (2018). This novel tells about a Nigerian girl who experiences an unpleasant life. Past events that she received such as beating her siblings, being abandoned by her parents and even being sexually abused made her traumatized. The trauma she experienced, pushed her to do various dangerous things. This study used a qualitative method and data sources were obtained from the narration and dialogue in the “Freshwater” novel. The writer used the theory of trauma from Cathy Caruth (1995) was applied in this study. The results of this study show that the character in this novel has forms of responses to trauma such as experiencing anxiety as recurring nightmares, avoiding everything that reminds them of the traumatic experience and arousal. The effect of the trauma experienced is also detrimental to the main character, such as hyperarousal, self-harm and the presence of multiple personalities in the character.
