Abstract

This study aims to identify the type of code-switch and the reasons for using Singlish code-switching in the novel Sarong Party Girl by Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan. The study applied qualitative content analysis as a research method. To analyze the novel, the writer uses the theory about code-switching by Ronald Wardhaugh in his books Introduction to Sociolinguistic (2006) and to strengthen the study, the writer also uses theory from Janet Holmes in her books An Introduction to Sociolinguistics (1992). The results of this study show that the use of code-switching in the novel is intra-sententially dominated, in which the narrative also uses a lot of Malay phrases, while the reasons for using code-switching in this novel is as depiction of Singaporean people, which are multilingual society, as switching code is a part of their identity.
