Abstract

This study examines the illocutionary acts used in a movie script. Specifically, the objectives of this study are to analyze the types and the functions of illocutionary acts in “The Fate of The Furious” series 8 movie script. Qualitative method is used to collect the data as shown in the utterance form. During the process of solving the problems in this study, the theory of Searle (1979) is used for analyzing the types of illocutionary acts. This study finds out five categories of illocutionary acts in the movie script. Based on the data analysis, there are forty data that have been collected with various functions in each type of illocutionary acts. The data that are found such as 8 for assertives, 17 for directive, 4 for commissive, 10 for expressive, and one data for declaration. The most dominant type of illocutionary act in the movie script is directive. In addition, there are many various functions found in each type of illocutionary act. These include claiming (1), stating (2), assuring (1), arguing (1), informing (1), clarifying (2), requesting (3), ordering (4), commanding (6), begging (1), inviting (2), advising (1), promising (3), threatening (1), apologizing (2), thanking (2), praising (3), welcoming (1), congratulating (1), disappointing (1), and firing (1). The function that is most highly used is commanding. The result of the analysis shows that the directive, particularly functioning as commanding is highly used because it relates to the movie “The Fate of The Furious” series 8 which presents how communication happened in a group or team. It shows that there are many instructions and commands that are conveyed between the leader to the members or conversely.
