Abstract

This study aims to examine how the colorism occurs in the book Sulwe picture book by Lupita Nyong’o. Colorism is prejudice or discrimination against individual with a dark skin tone, typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group. The object of this study is a picture book entitled Sulwe written by Lupita Nyong’o. The theory applied in this study is Critical Race Theory from Delgado and Stefanic (2001). The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques thorough images and text contained in the book Sulwe. The result of this study shows that the colorism happened in Sulwe because of her skin color. The effects of colorism in Sulwe’s life are loneliness and the action of self-hatred. The benefit of this study is to increase people's knowledge about colorism where fellow human beings should not judge others as lower just based on dark skin color, because differences in skin color are unique in a person.
