Abstract

The goal of this study is to analyze types and reasons cause code switching in “Maudy Ayunda - My Student Life at Oxford” YouTube video that was published in 2016. Qualitative research method is applied to analyze the topic. Hoffman (1991) theory is used to help analyzing the types and the reasons cause code switching. Hoffman mentions there are 3 types of code switching; emblematic switching also known as tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra- sentential switching. In addition, Hoffman also explains there are 7 reasons causing people to switch code; talking about a particular topic, quoting somebody else, being emphatic about something (express solidarity), interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors, repetition used for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, and expressing group identity. Based on data analysis, there are 31 datum found in Maudy Ayunda - My Student Life at Oxford which consist of 7 datum of inter-sentential switching and 24 datum of intra- sentential switching. Furthermore, the reasons for code switching the writer found is 16 datum of talking about a particular topic, 2 datum of interjection, 1 datum of repetition used for clarification, and 12 datum of intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor.
