Abstract

This study aims to find an English grammar error made by students in writing an application letter at Avicenna Tenjo Vocational High School. The grammatical errors that are sought in this study are about the types and sources of errors made by students when writing an applications letter. This study was conducted because the student often making errors in writing the application letter. This study uses a qualitative descriptive qualitative method. The results of this study showed that 12 types of grammatical errors made by students in writing application letters from 14 types of errors based on the theory of Betty Schrampfer Azar (2002). The 12 grammatical errors are Singular & Plural as many as 3 grammatical errors or 5.8%, Word Choice as many as 33 or 6.01%, Add word as much as 2 or 3.80%, Omit Word as many as 11 or by 21.20%, Capitalization 157 or 30.19%, Punctuation 277 or 53.27%, Verb Tense as much or 21.20%, Incomplete Sentence as much as 2 by 3.80%, Spelling as much as 12 or 23 .10%, Article as much as 1 or 1.90%, Meaning Not Clear as much as 11 or by 21.20%, and overall the total grammatical errors were 520 errors from 30 students of class 11.3 majoring in marketing at Avicenna Tenjo Vocational High School.The sources of grammatical errors are performance factors, caused by fatigue, innatention factors, lack of knowledge of language rules, and systematic deviations caused by students' knowledge of the English Language.
