Abstract

This study aims to examine the linguistic landscape in a food community in the middle of a Chinatown shopping center located in Petak Enam Pancoran, Glodok. This study examines the diversity of language displayed that appear on food shop sign, this study also analyzes the linguistic landscape function of the food shop sign. This research uses a mixed methods of qualitative and quantitative method, by using an exploratory design method. Based on the theory of Landry & Bourhis (1997) from the collected pictures there are about 30 signs on the food shop in Petak Enam Pancoran. The results of this study show that the results of the language displayed are almost entirely dominated by signs containing one language around (67%). The languages displayed on food shop signs in Petak Enam Pancoran are Indonesia (47%), followed by English (32%), Mandarin (7%), Javanese (7%), and Dutch (7%). Furthermore, the function of the linguistic landscape on the food shop signs in Petak Enam Glodok was found in the informational function and the symbolic function.
