Abstract

The study is entitled, “The Portrayal of Power in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story Movie (2019).” The study uses Marriage Story movie which released in August 2019, both written and directed by Noah Baumbach, as object of analysis. The aims of the study are to analyze the forms of power relation and the forms of power resistance in a relationship. The writer uses qualitative approach as well as the report of the study is presented in narrative form. The primary data processed by the writer refer to both narrative and cinematography elements. The theory which used by the writer mostly taken by Foucault (1977), theory of power, power relation, and power resistance. Foucault (1977) stated, in relationship, power comes along with the resistance. He also mentioned that where there is power, there is also resistance. The result of the study are there are several forms of power relation appear, which are in power relation of a husband to his wife, and power relation of director to the actress. The result of power resistance is also appeared, which are the resistance of wife to her husband, and the resistance of actress to the director.
