Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating the types and functions of politeness strategies used by Trevor Noah in his stand-up comedy show titled "Being Black in America". The object of this study is “Being Black in America” (2019) stand-up comedy show on YouTube. This study applies descriptive qualitative as the research approach and uses content analysis as the research design. To guide this study, the writer uses the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987). The result of this study shows 31 utterances indicating politeness strategies used by Trevor Noah. The types of politeness strategies are divided into bald on-record, negative politeness, positive politeness, and off-record. There are two utterances that are indicated as bald on record, categorized as warning and promise. Additionally, there is one utterance that is indicated as negative politeness, falling under the category of hedges. Furthermore, there are eighteen utterances indicated as positive politeness, further classified into compliments, humor, and expressions of gratitude. Finally, there are 10 utterances indicated as off-record strategies, which are categorized as using sarcasm, figurative language, and hinting. Trevor Noah uses various language strategies in his stand-up comedy through their functions that help him to create an enjoyable and memorable experience for his audience while also addressing serious issues such as race, identity, and politics. The most frequent strategy that is used by Trevor Noah is positive politeness with the category of using humor.
