Abstract

This study mainly deals with the signification process and describes the public perspective of racial discrimination in the Mudbound movie by Dee Rees. The signification process shows how the meaning is discovered by analysing the signs’ denotative, connotative, and myth. The writer applies the qualitative method in this study as the analysis depicts various perspectives and texts. The primary data are from the historical movie Mudbound by Dee Rees, published in the United States in 2013. The writer analyses the data using Roland Barthes Semiotics (1972) theory and Freud L. Pincus Discrimination (1996) theory. In this study the writer focuses on the data in the form of words sentences and selected scenes by the movie’s characters in constructing the signification. The writer found 8 signs that show denotation, connotation and myth of discrimination signs in Mudbound movie. The signs of discrimination are supported by the public perspective of discrimination in the historical era depicted in the movie. Furthermore, this becomes evident that Mudbound effectively reveals the profound and lasting effects of discrimination experienced by black individuals within a white-dominated society during the era. There are two kinds of racial discrimination that found in Mudbound, which are individual discrimination and institutional discrimination. On the other hand, individual discrimination is described with prejudice. Institutional discrimination is described with economic inequality and segregation. Moreover, the meaning of the movie Mudbound is beyond its narrative, as it shows a poignant commentary of racial discrimination, inviting viewers to reflect upon the enduring impact of such injustices on marginalized communities.
