Abstract

This study analyzes the racial discrimination experienced by black characters. The object of this study is a novel entitled Black Brother, Black Brother by Jewell Parker Rhodes. This study is aimed at revealing the racial discrimination that occurs in the novel. Theory from Gordon W. Allport (1954) is applied to reveal racial discrimination as guidance. Besides, a qualitative approach (Creswell, 2007) is used in analyzing the main issue and the data is obtained from dialogues and narrative text in the novel. The result of this study shows that there are three aspects of racial discrimination, they are verbal rejection (anti-locution), discrimination (including segregation), and physical attack. Moreover, this study shows that prejudiced behavior occurs in the discriminatory act. To conclude, this study portrays that racial discrimination has negative impacts on the lives of black people. Keywords: black people, discrimination, impacts, prejudice
