Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze racial prejudice portrayed in a novel entitled We Are Not Like Them (2021), written by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza. This analysis focuses on the portrayal of racial prejudice and the response to racial prejudice experienced by the main character. The writer applies the qualitative method and prejudice theory by Allport (1954) to analyze the data. The result of this study shows the existence of racial prejudice based on the depiction of four acts of prejudice in the novel. These are antilocution, avoidance, discrimination, and physical attack. Moreover, this study shows the existence of ego defense mechanisms by the victims as the response to racial prejudice, namely obsessive concern, strengthen in-group ties, and enhanced striving.
