Abstract

This study aims to analyze the signs and the relation between the symbols on the scenes and the lyrics on the music video. The study is entitled “A Semiotic Analysis on Music Video of Birthday by Anne Marie”. Semiotics is the study of signs. Signs can be in the form of gestures, pictures, colors, and writing. This study uses the qualitative descriptive method as the analysis presented in the form of an essay by using Peirce’s theory. More precisely, icons, indexes, and symbols are used to examine signs. The object of this study is the “Birthday” music video in Anne Marie's song. The objects are limited to the signs in the scenes and lyrics. Based on the study, the writer found twenty-one scenes along with the lyrics. The results show that in all the icons in the scenes, there are lots of balloons, various cakes, and the dominant pink. Then, the index describes the birthday party, confidence, and feminine. Thus, the symbol becomes happiness, showing off, and girly. While the icons in the lyrics are I, everybody, and you. Then, the index relates to the speaker, people, and the listener. So, the symbol contains herself, life, and someone else. That means, the scenes show a fun birthday party but the lyrics are related to the romantic life, there are similarities and differences between the scenes and lyrics in this music video.
