Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the types and functions of deixis in a movie script. The data came from dialogue utterances in the "Thor: Ragnarok" movie script, which is the subject of the study. The data were analyzed using a qualitative approach since the data were presented and analyzed in the form of text. This study used Levinson's theory (1983) to analyze the types of deixis and Potts (2012) to analyze the functions of deixis. The result of the study indicates that deixis has found 80 data points of person deixis, 1 data point of time deixis, 5 data points of place deixis, 3 data points of social deixis, and 4 data points of discourse deixis. Based on the analysis, the dominant type of deixis found is person deixis. The functions of deixis were dominantly used by Hela to provoke her enemies, dominate them, and attack them to take her throne back. It was also used to show that her power is greater than others by neologizing them by calling herself the Goddest of Death.
