Abstract

This study was entitled Racial Prejudice in Malorie Blackman’s Novel Noughts and Crosses. The study aimed to analyze racial prejudice and the main character responses depicted in Malorie Blackman’s novel entitled Noughts and Crosses (2001). The novel portrayed about prejudice against racial differences experienced by the main character. There were two different races named Noughts who are the white people and the Crosses who are the black people. The study applied a qualitative research method (Creswell, 2013) and used Gordon Allport’s scales of prejudice (Allport, 1954) to discuss acts of racial prejudice. The theory also elaborates the victim’s behavior in facing the prejudice itself. From the data analysis it was found that there were acts of prejudice that were motivated by racial differences. There were 5 types of actions that reflected racial prejudice against whites written in the novel, including verbal antagonism, avoidance, discrimination, segregation, and physical attacks. There were also two behaviors showed by the main character in dealing the prejudice such as intropunitive and extropunitive.
