Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the politeness strategies in a video on YouTube. The object of the study is a talk show video entitled “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” on YouTube. The data are taken from Jimmy Kimmel’s utterances. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. This method describes the analysis in the form of essay. The writer uses Brown and Levinson (1987) theory in analyzing the data. As a result, this study reveals that there are 39 data of politeness strategies which are found in the video. They are Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness and Bald off Record. There are 4 data of Bald on Record, 27 data of Positive Politeness, 7 data of Negative Politeness and 1 data of Bald off Record used by Jimmy Kimmel. Positive Politeness is the most frequently used by Jimmy Kimmel instead by Negative politeness, Bald on Record and the last is Bald off Record as the most rarely used by Jimmy Kimmel in “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”.
