Abstract

The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the politeness strategies used in the interview which contained dialogues that could be analyzed using the topics in this thesis. The object of this thesis is a video interview entitled “The Q Interview: Adele Opens Up about 30” (2021), which was broadcast through Q on CBC YouTube Channel. The writer used the theory of Penelope Brown and Stephen. C. Levinson (1987) to guide the writer in analyzing politeness strategies. This thesis used qualitative methods as an analysis presented in the form of text or images. The results of this thesis indicated that in conveying their utterances, both the host and the guest star used four types of politenessstrategies, such as bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. Some factors also influenced their utterances, such as payoffs and circumstances. Positive politeness became the most widely used politeness strategy in the interview. Moreover, the payoffs and social distance factors were the most influential factors in their utterances.
