Abstract

This study focuses on the maxim of violation in the “Gepetto” webtoon by Jewon Yeon. The objective of the study is to analyze the types and functional violations of the maxims that appeared in the “Gepetto” webtoon. The data were identified and analyzed from the conversation in the “Gepetto” webtoon based on the theory of Grice (1989) combined with the theory of Leech (1983) to analyze the function of the maxim. This study used a qualitative approach. Based on the analysis, it was found there are 24 of maxim violation consisting of 4 maxim violation of quantity, 2 maxim violation of quality, 8 maxim violation of relevance, and 10 maxim violation of manner. In addition, the result of the study shows that the most dominant maxim violation in this study is the maxim violation of manner.
