Abstract

This study was to describing society patriarchy and revealing how the character faces gender discrimination in the Reading Lolita in Tehran novel by Nafisi (2003). To reveal the patriarchy issue, a qualitative approach was used to identify and gather quotations from the novel and to analyze them regarding the patriarchy issue. In analyzing the patriarchy system experienced by women characters in the novel, the theory by Walby (1991) was applied. The result showed that the women character was trapped inside the patriarchy system that bounded themselves doing their activity both in-home and public. The result of the study also portrayed that women life is under pressure and controlled by men in several parts like work, state, sex, household, and culture. However, this study also shows that with knowledge women can resist the patriarchy and get freedom. Keywords: Feminism, Gender Inequality, Patriarchy system
