Abstract

Pragmatics is one of the most interesting scopes of linguistics to study, unlike semantics deals with the literal meaning of the context or with the intended as it is referred. This study investigates the types of conversational implicatures and the context implicit meanings in the movie Avengers: Endgame by Joe and Anthony Russo. The data were collected by identifying and analyzing utterances from conversations done by the characters in the movie. Yule’s theory (1996) was used in analyzing the types and analyzing the context to find out the implied meaning. The source of the data was taken from the character's dialogue in the movie Avengers: endgame. The utterances that contain implicatures were divided into three categories: generalized conversational implicature, particularized conversational implicature, and scalar implicature. As the result of the study, it was found from 33 data, 17 data were particularized conversational implicature, 11 data were generalized conversational implicature, and 5 data were scalar implicature. As the result, it can be concluded that every utterance has a different context and each of the contexts influences the implied meaning.
