Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze many kinds of impoliteness strategies that are used by participants and the function of each impoliteness itself. The subject of this study is the videos in the “Among Us” gameplay of Kaif and his friends. The titles of the videos are “I’VE BEEN SET UP” uploaded on April 26th 2020, and “When You Blame The Dead Guy”, uploaded on October 2nd 2020. Conversation is also restricted to the discussion section of the game. The method used in this study is qualitative research as the analysis presented in impoliteness utterances. The impoliteness strategy by Jonathan Culpeper (2016) is used by the writer as a guide in this study. The discussion included impoliteness strategies and impoliteness triggers which both were proposed by Culpeper himself. The study found that impoliteness was frequently used as a strategy in conversations between subjects. Positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, bald on-record impoliteness, and off-record impoliteness are all appearing with bald on-record – positive impoliteness mostly used in it. Due to a lack of requirements, one of impoliteness strategies, withhold politeness, does not appear in the conversation between the participants. The discussion found from 12 triggers, only 10 used in the utterances between the subjects. There are insults, pointed criticisms/complaints, unpalatable questions, condescension, message enforcer, dismissals, silencers, threats, negative expressive, form driven. The missing triggers are convection driven and context driven. The study result also indirectly shows the closer the relationship is, the more frequent in using bald on-record impoliteness and positive impoliteness.
