Abstract

This study analyzed the representation of power relations and resistance and its effect in Human Acts novel. In order to analyze the issues, Gaventa’s theory of power and resistance was applied to the study. Power relations exist in every aspect of society. It usually happened between two groups with different amounts of power, one is dominant and the other is the submissive one. The dominant one is the elite while the other is the non-elite. The result of this study shows that there are three dimensions of power relationships described in the novel with the first dimensions of power-relationship dominating the novel. Through the analysis of the data, it was found that the elite will do anything in order to keep the non-elite in their powerless state. The study also found that resistance exists where the power is. Resistance is done by the non-elite in order to make the elite heard their needs.
