Abstract

The study explored the effect of using describing picture on the students' improvement of English speaking at the tenth-grade students of SMK Bunda Kandung Jakarta and found out the students' problem in learning speaking using describing picture strategy. The study was conducted at SMK Bunda Kandung Jakarta, involving 40 students in tenth grade (class TM-2). Using quasi experiment research design, in this study, the writer collected the data through pre-test, post�test, and questionnaires. To analyze the effect, the writer used an independent T�test and checked the score of sig. 2-tailed. The data analysis showed that the sig 2- tailed is 0.008 which means Hα is accepted and Ho is rejected. Based on the hypothesis stated in chapter 3, Hα is accepted if the score of sig. 2-tailed is lower than 0.05. However, H0 is accepted if the sig. 2-tailed is higher than 0.05. As a result, the analysis showed that the sig. 2-tailed is 0.008, and it is lower than 0.05. It can be assumed that there is a significant effect of Describing Pictures on students’ speaking skills. Also, based on the student' responses in the questionnaire, they considered that describing pictures is an effective and suitable strategy in teaching English speaking skills. This finding conforming the previous research finding that describing picture can help students to improve students' English speaking skill. Nevertheless, there were some problems gained in using describing picture strategy. Many students could not apply grammar correctly when they speak by using the strategy and found the difficulty to understand English when their friends speak English using describing pictures. They could not speak English fluently and concentrate on speaking English when the teacher used the strategy.
