Abstract

With the rapid growth of technology, the use of social media is necessary nowadays. In doing communication in social media, sometimes people feel free to say anything to everyone without noticing the others' faces that will affect their social relationships. For holding this case, people must do politeness which refers to awareness of an individual or a group to someone's self-image. In this thesis, the writer focuses on 40 comments of netizens on Ridwan Kamil's tweets which his account has reached 4,4 million followers. What the type of politeness strategies are used by netizens and how the politeness strategies are used become the objectives of this study. In analyzing the data, the writer used the theory of Brown & Levinson (1987) about politeness strategies. The qualitative approach is used in this study. The results of the research show that netizen prefers to use positive politeness (52,5%), then followed by off-record (22,5%), bald-on-record (20%), and negative politeness (5%). The positive politeness that becomes the most strategy that is used by netizens shows that they want to satisfy Ridwan Kamil's positive face. It can also give an intimate impression of the netizens to the governor.
