Abstract

This study aims to describe the kinds of social segregation revealed and the struggle of the lower class against the oppression of the upper class in the novel. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The object is “The Handmaid’s Tale” novel. The data were expressions in sentences, dialogue, and paragraphs related to social segregation and the struggle of the lower class. In collecting data, the read-write technique was used. The writer uses the theory of social segregation by Kenneth Clark (1953) and social class theory by Frans Magnis-Suseno (1999) as the basis to analyze the problem of this study. In this study, the writer concerns about social segregation; class separation and human exploitation. The analysis of this study indicates two significant points that can be concluded from this study. First, class segregation is categorized into several classes; Handmaids, Marthas, Commanders, Commanders' Wives, Aunts, and Guardians. Second, lower class’ struggle against upper class’ oppression. The upper classes are Commanders, Wives, and Aunts. The lower classes are the Marthas, Handmaids, and Guardians.
