Abstract

This study entitled “The Panopticism in Pierce Brown’s Red Rising” tries to uncover how Michel Foucault’s panopticism theory (1975) works and to figure out its role in the operation of The Institute, the main setting of the novel. The study focuses on identifying the panoptic mechanisms and analyzing how the mechanisms affect the subjects and the whole operation of The Institute. The novel as the object of this study tells a story about class struggle of Red, the lowest class in Mars. Darrow as the main character is recruited as a secret agent of a terrorist organization and should infiltrate the Gold class as the ruling class of the society. In order to do this, Darrow should pass the Institute, the place that all top tier Golds have passed before rising in the society. The study finds that the whole students and apparatus in the Institute are the subject of power, and the panopticism tremendously helps the Institute to achieve its objectives in sorting the best of the students efficiently and effectively.
