Abstract

The purpose of this study entitled “A Psychoanalysis of The Main Character’s Characterization and Personality in Joyce Carol Oates ‘Where are You Going, Where Have You Been?’ Short Story” was to describe about Connie’s characterization and personality using psychoanalysis perspective by Sigmund Freud (1923). The primary data were taken from “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” short story written by Joyce Carol Oates. Secondary data were taken from Psychoanalysis theory by Freud (1923) which was taken from some textbooks. In conducting this thesis, Qualitative approach was used by reading the story completely in order to comprehend the storyline of the short story and finding section contains the issue related to the main character ‘s characterization and personality. Based on the finding of the study, it was found Connie’s characterizations are described as young teenager, narcissist, insecure, and coward. But then becomes selfish, reckless, multiple personality, rebellious, and liar because her desires to showing her maturity and her mother’s threat. Connie’s personality was divided into three levels of mind, Id, Ego, and Superego according to psychoanalysis by Freud (1923). This study might be useful for those who are interested in conducting a study on character’s analysis. Key word: Character, Characterization, Personality, Psychoanalysis, Id, Ego and Superego.
