Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explain what types of speech acts are used in Maher Zain’s selected song lyrics and to identify the condition influencing speech acts to be appropriate. This study applies qualitative method because of the data are in sentence form. This study also applies Kreidler’s (1998) theory of speech act and Yule’s (1996) theory of appropriate condition. The writer found several results. First, seven types of speech acts found in 40 data that have taken from seven songs. Second, Performative is the most commonly used in Maher Zain’s songs lyrics. Third, Sincerity condition is the dominant condition influencing some speech acts to be appropriate. Keywords: speech acts, seven types of speech acts, appropriate condition.
