Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the racial discrimination issue in Langston Hughes’three selected short stories. The objects of this study are short stories entitled Cora Unashamed (2001), Slave on The Block (2005), and Poor Little Black fellow (2005). As guidance, the writer uses binary opposition theory from Ferdinand de Saussure (2005) and the theory of racial discrimination by examining Gordon Alport (2004). This study applies the qualitative research method, the narrative elements portrayed black characters as the victims of discrimination acts. Based on the analysis, there are three kinds of discrimination in three short stories: unfair treatment, verbal antagonism, and avoidance.
