Abstract

This study is entitled “Depiction of Panopticon in Lois Lowry’s The Giver Novel. This study is aimed at showing the depiction of panopticon in “The Giver” novel by Lois Lowry (1993). Foucault’s theory named Panopticon theory (1995) is used to identify and analyze the data which consists of quotation and explanation. In analyzing data, the writer used descriptive qualitative method. Those data and analysis are explained in short essay. Result of this study, the writer concludes that based on the analysis of dialogue and narration in “The Giver” novel using Panopticon theory, it is found that the quotation from the dialogue and narration in “The giver” novel related to the Panopticon theory. In this study, concerns on depiction of Panopticon that occurred in the society in “The Giver” novel which is obviously can be seen in every story, that the depiction of panopticon can be seen through several tools used by the controller, such as: cameras and medication. The tools have purposes to discipline the controlled people using supervision and controller’s power and to determine one’s life using observation. The effect of panopticon can be seen in the controlled people that the people is to be prisoner. Therefore it made the people lose their rights.
