Abstract

This study aims to portray resistance as rejection and denial of the Western Culture done by the Indian character in The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai. Through this study, it can be described that resistance is considered as one’s determination to hold on to native culture, even when adaptation is needed to survive in new environment. Furthermore, the Indian characters receive racial discrimination from people in their new environment because of racism which is triggered by some differences between Indian character and Western people. In this study, the concept of Orientalism by Edward Said is applied as representative of East and West to analyse resistance in The Inheritance of Loss novel. The result of this study shows the presence of resistance through the tradition, custom and the choice of food by the Indian characters in The Inheritance of Loss novel as the action to reject and denial towards the Western culture and survive to adaptation in their new environment. Moreover, in the end of this study, it is found that the discrimination is the cause of resistance to the Indian characters in The Heritance of Loss novel.
