Abstract

This study is aimed to reveal psychological, the effects of trauma, and the self-defense mechanisms raised of Megan Character in The Girl On The Train Novel. This study uses the theory of trauma by Pearlman and Saaktivne (995: 60). While for the cause of trauma, the theories of Keane, Gerardi, Quinn, and Litz (1992) in Neale, Davidson, and Haaga (1996) suggest that other effects of trauma other than PTSD are anxiety. This study also uses self-defense mechanisms of Freud (1936) in solving the traumatic effects experienced by the Character. Thereby the psychological traumas of Megan were found in the novel are a traumatic loss, drugs abuse, marital problems, witnessing traumatic events. While the effects of psychological traumas are guilt, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and anxiety. The self-defense mechanisms is used to solve Megan’s traumas, they are denial, repression, sublimation, and displacement. Keywords: Novel, Character, Trauma, PTSD, Anxiety, and Defense Mechanism
