Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the novel based on psychoanalysis theory, focusing on anxiety and ego defense mechanism analysis. This study explained about the anxieties suffered by Veronica Miller (Ronnie) as the major character, and how she uses ego defense mechanisms to cover up her anxieties as the way to solve the problem. The Last Song novel written by Nicholas Sparks was chosen as the data for the object of the study. Meanwhile in analyzing the data, the writer applies qualitative method and descriptive analysis. As for the theory, anxiety’s theory of Freud and ego defense mechanism’s theory of Vaillant were used to support this study. Form the data analysis, it was found that; Ronnie suffers from realistic, neurotic, and moral anxiety. In order to reduce those anxieties, Ronnie uses denial, distortion, acting out, passive-aggressive behavior, projection, displacement, dissociation, intellectualization, reaction formation, repression, and anticipation as the tactics called ego defense mechanism. Keyword: literature, psychoanalysis, anxiety, ego defense mechanism.
