Abstract
This study aims at describing the types and functions of code-mixing and code switching in learning English focusing on the students’ conversations at New Concept English Education Center (NCEEC). In this study, the writer used theory of Peter Stockwell to analize the types of code-mixing and code-switching and Marasigan’s theory to analyze the function of code-mixing and code-switching. The data were taken from two different classes, Pre Introduction and Elementary level. The analysis showed that from 30 data of code-mixing and code-switching in the students’ conversation. There are 15 data of code-mixing and 15 data of code-switching. From 15 data of code-mixing, the writer found 3 data as tag-mixing, 4 data as inter-sentential, and 8 data as intra-sentential. While, regarding the functions, found 3 data function as message qualification, 1 data function as personalization and objectivization, and 11 data function as facility expression. And from 15 data of code-switching, there are 2 data as tag-switching, 10 data as inter-sentential, and 3 data as intra-sentential. From 15 data of code-switching, there are 3 data function as addressee specification, 1 data has function as repitition, 3 data have function as interjections, 1 data function as personalization and objectivization, and 7 data function as facility of expression.
