Abstract

This study discussed the use of taboo words and swear words in the “The Duff Novel by Kody Keplinger. The purpose of this study is to classify the categories of taboo words and swear words and the factors which cause the character use the taboo and swear words in the novel. In this study the writer used qualitative approach. There are four stages done in this study; reading The Duff novel, identifying, classifying, analyzing all the data from the utterances that are considered to be taboo and swear words by using the theory from Michael Swan for analyzing the categories of taboo words and swear words, and Jay’s theory for finding the reason of using the taboo words and swear word. This study shows that in the dialogues found 14 data of taboo words and 21 data of swear words. From 14 data of taboo words, the writer found 3 data as religion, 8 data as sex activity, and 3 data as private parts of the body. While, regarding the functions found 11 data as psychology and 3 data as social class. And from 21 data of swear words, there are 3 data as exclamation of surprise, 9 data as insult, 6 data as exclamation of annoyance, and 3 data as surprised question. From 21 data of swear words, there are 20 data as psychology and 1 data as social class.
