Abstract

The aim of this study entitled “Linkage of Conor O’ Malley’s Denial to Personality Disorder in “A Monster Calls” Novel” is to analyze how denial links to personality disorder using Sigmund Freud’s psychological analysis theory which explains how disturbance of normal functioning can occur in a person’s personality and its relation to defense mechanism. The role of id, ego, and superego which is the outline of Sigmund Freud’s theory shows how personality disorder can determine the defense mechanism he took. In this novel, a perspective on the stresses faced by 13-year-old boys was taken on the data sources. At a very young age, he had to experience many bad events that affected his psychology, especially about the condition of his mother who would die soon because of cancer. In analyzing the novel, qualitative method is used to explain the analysis which is in the form of utterance and paragraph. Based on the results of the study, Conor’s character experiences personality disorder that causes the id and superego functions not to be channeled properly so that the ego encouragement describes a satisfying tool aimed at the behavior of self-defense actions.
