Abstract

anxieties that focuses on the characters which found in several short stories written by Edgar Allan Poe. Qualitative method was chosen to conduct this study. The purpose of this study is to reveal the main character’s anxiety through the symptoms of anxiety based on Miller’s theory. In this study, the writer also found several causes of anxieties such as, repression, environment, frustration, and fear that were analyzed using Freud’s theories of anxiety and self defense mechanisms. There were four popular short stories in this analysis. The main characters show four kinds of the ego defense mechanism such as displacement, reaction formation, introjection, and sublimation. It is hoped this study could give contribution for literary criticism study for the next writers. Keyword: Literary Criticism, Psychoanalysis, Anxiety
